Younger skin for a younger Buick

GM tapped its Chinese designers to treat the LaCrosse's cabin. The result is tasteful design of swooping lines crafted from quality materials. The interior is accented with ambient lighting in the dash, center console, and doors that glows ice blue.

With a base price of $33,765, the top-of-the-line CXS comes with a well-equipped, luxurious cockpit. Interior appointments include leather, heated and ventilated front seats with eight-way power adjustment for both driver and passenger, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel with audio controls.

Because many Chinese car owners won't actually drive their Buicks (they'll be chauffeured, of course), GM placed extra emphasis on the rear compartment design. Legroom is expansive, and the rear seats are comfortable. While many sedans make do with a flat, benchlike rear seat, the Buick offers supportive, bucketlike seats for two passengers with room for a third on the hump. An available rear-window sunscreen raises and lowers with the push of a button next to the gear selector. All LaCrosses feature a 12-volt plug in the rear of the center console; a 120-volt AC power outlet is also available.

What's luxury without technology?

The high-end CXS comes with an extensive list of standard technology, including Bluetooth, keyless entry and ignition, an eleven-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, a USB port, and the rear AC outlet. For $350, a head-up display shows speed, rpm, outside temperature, and a compass. When listening to satellite radio, song titles appear on the windshield as the song changes, and navigation directions show up as you approach a turn. Our test car came standard with rear parking sensors and was also equipped with the $1995 navigation system, which incorporates a rear backup camera. There's also an available rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two screens mounted on the back of the front seats. 

First Drive: 2010 Subaru Outback

For fifteen years, the Outback as all but defined Subaru in the United States. The high-riding wagons have been the perfect vessels for the brand's signature all-wheel-drive system. Through three generations, the Outback formula has effectively remained the same. For the fourth-generation 2010 Outback, Subaru has made the most significant changes so far to its best-known model.

The Sport-Utility Wagon: More of the former, less of the latter.

Subaru had been offering four-wheel-drive station wagons here since the mid 1970s, but it wasn't until 1995 that the company created the Outback as a special model. Essentially an all-wheel-drive Legacy station wagon with extra ground clearance and a rugged, outdoorsy image, the Outback has hewn to the same formula through two successive redesigns, even as it has added more engine options (including a turbocharged four and a six-cylinder) and more luxury features.

For 2010, however, the Outback branches out, using a unique bodyshell instead of borrowing one from the Legacy wagon (which is no longer sold in North America, but is still offered in Subaru's home market). Given free reign to craft an Outback-specific body, Subaru designers evolved the shape away from a pure station wagon and more towards a crossover/SUV--much as they did with the new Forester last year.

As a result, the car is fractionally shorter in length (by 0.8 inch) but substantially taller in height (growing 2.0 inches) and wider (2.3 inches). The larger body provides more passenger room and cargo space. Most significant is the increase in rear-seat

First Drive: 2010 Kia Forte

Give Kia credit; it's not afraid to take on a monumental task. The ambitious Korean automaker didn't start selling cars in the United States until 1994, and a mere fifteen years later it offers a full range of vehicles, from the entry-level Rio sedan to the seven-passenger Borrego SUV to the spunky, funky Soul "urban passenger vehicle." As with almost every other carmaker, its sales are down this year (although Kia's 6.8 percent drop looks positively paltry compared with the double-digit dips suffered by most of its competitors). The faltering economy hasn't stopped Kia from forging ahead with its product plans, however. In fact, the automaker boasts that not only have there been no cutbacks, but in May, it spent more money marketing its products than during any other month in company history.

Which brings us to the all-new Forte. With the Forte, Kia has set its sights on the notoriously competitive (and profit-challenged) compact sedan segment, and it is aiming squarely at the powerhouses that currently dominate the market: the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. That's no small task, and one at which Kia's erstwhile small sedan, the Spectra, utterly failed.

Compared with the Spectra, the Forte has a more dynamic look, with a distinct wedge-shaped profile and a wider stance. Its trunk is cavernous, with 14.7 cubic feet of cargo volume that can be further extended by lowering the split-folding rear seats. The cabin is nicely appointed, with cloth or leather seats, a user-friendly center stack, steering-wheel-mounted controls, standard Sirius radio, and Bluetooth.

Driven: 2010 Ferrari California

Through a fluke in timing or just plain luck, I'm fortunate enough to have now been behind the wheel of every single current Ferrari currently on sale. That's a rarity even for automotive journalists, and it's an honor I don't take lightly. Today's drive of the California marked a special occasion, since this was not just the only Ferrari I haven't driven, it's also an all-new kind of Ferrari.

The California is full of firsts: it's the first-ever front-mounted V-8-engined Ferrari, it's the first use of direct injection in a Ferrari, and it's Ferrari's first dual-clutch automated manual transmission. It's also the first Ferrari built on a modular architecture, and the first built on a new production line that is downright spooky in its modernity. I was able to tour the facility last month, and the California's production line is spotlessly clean, eerily quiet, and freakishly automated. On the one hand, computerized, precise mass production makes the California seem somehow less special; on the other, it ensures the highest level of quality. I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff, especially for a Ferrari that's inherently less special than some others.

Screeeetch -- less special? I mean the California no insult by that. It's the least expensive offering in Ferrari's stable, but that's only part of the reason why. The other reason is that I equate "special" with "insane." I, a certified automotive nutcase, adore the F430 for its insanity. I love the way it crackles and barks and screams. I love how it scares small children and grown men alike with its acoustic assault; how it accelerates and shifts with such violence that it renders its passengers hysterical. I love how its occupants are assaulted with the feel of every pebble on the road after luring them in with the sight and aroma of the world's finest materials.

Some, however, might find the F430 a bit much. For these people, Ferrari makes the California. The California is a softer, milder, less insane Ferrari. Ergo, it's less special to crazy people like me, but it's no less special in the real world. A grand tourer in the traditional sense of the word, Ferrari's hard-top convertible is smooth and luxurious. Its sound level and ride are sedate by Ferrari standards, and its cabin elegant and luxurious.

2010 Nissan Versa

The Japanese automaker Nissan has revealed details about both the 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan 2010 Versa. Both models will go on sale starting in September of 2009, and start at $9,990 for the sedan and $13,150 for the practical hatchback model.

For 2010 the Nissan Versa gets a slight restyling with an upgraded grill, new interior fabric patterns, white back lit instrument cluster with Nissan’s familiar reddish orange glow. The Versa 1.8 S wears a new set of 15-inch wheel covers and new 1.8 SL hatchback gets a new set of 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

The entry level Nissan Versa Sedan 1.6 Base and Versa Sedan 1.6 models are powered by a 107 HP 1.6 Liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine, while the Versa Hatchback and Sedan 1.8 S and 1.8 SL offer a 122 HP 1.8 Liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine standard. An added safety measure for the new Nissan is an Anti-lock Braking System that now comes standard on the 1.8 S model, while sticking around as a standard offering on the 1.8 SL.

The rest of the Nissan Versa’s standard equipment list includes: Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio (XM subscription required, sold separately) and an audio system with Clarion speakers and Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer. All these amenities add up to make the Nissan Versa an affordably practical ride.

Forget the idea that Suzuki only makes dirt bikes and watercraft. The Suzuki SX4 is one of those high value products that are probably misunderstood for its size. Suzuki took the SX4 and gave it a complete makeover using high quality materials and tasteful styling to re-create a strong competitor in the sub compact class. Even a Yaris owner might think that the SX4 is a bit too small for them, but that all changes once you get into this little car with a big interior. It literally makes you forget that you are sitting in a sub-compact. Once you are behind the wheel of this small giant you also forget that you are driving a little car because of its 2.0 4 cylinder engine paired with Suzuki’s CVT 6 speed manual transmission.

The interior is one of the Suzuki SX4’s best attributes sporting a simple, user friendly design and top-notch materials. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, full power door locks, power mirrors, power windows, a CD/MP3 player and a six-way manual driver seat that provides good space for taller drivers. The SX4 I had came equipped with the Sport trim package which added automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, a trip computer, a navigation system and a premium audio system with six-CD changer, subwoofer and steering wheel controls.

Surprisingly the cabin is quite spacious so there is plenty of room for five to ride comfortably. Other interior features include iPod and Bluetooth phone connectivity that are controlled through the steering wheel. The front seats hold you in well and feel comfortable. I also liked the armrest on both seats which make driving long distances more bearable. Rear leg room was not that bad, for a car of this size. Visibility is a plus on the SX4. The way the pillars are laid out gives the impression of a larger vehicle when you are actually driving a sub-compact. Trunk space on the SX4 is another feature that you would not expect to find in a small car, but once again Suzuki delivers in this area with 15 cubic feet of trunk capacity that can accommodate up to 3 carryon bags.

Fuel economy for the SX4 ranges from 25 mpg city to 32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. In the week I had this car I only made one trip to the gas station. The 2.0 is connected to Suzuki’s standard six-speed manual transmission (CVT). When paired with the CVT the engine’s output drops slightly to 148 hp. All SX4s are front-wheel drive except for the Crossover hatchback which offers an AWD option. This little car can actually take a turn well. Braking on the SX4, which comes equipped with a four-wheel disc anti lock brake system, was also up to par. I was very pleased with the throttle response on the highway when it came to passing other cars.

In summary, the 2010 Suzuki SX4 Sport back offers an affordable and fun option for city drivers looking to optimize their fuel efficiency without sacrificing too much cabin comfort. This is Suzuki’s least expensive car yet it offers a surprising amount of headroom and legroom for both driver and passenger. The stylish-looking interior includes plenty of standard and optional features. The SX4 travels down the road with a reasonably solid feel. At times you forget that you are behind the wheel of a subcompact! The SX4 four-cylinder engine is surprisingly strong and is up to the task when needed on the highway. Its roomy trunk easily converts the car from weekday commuter to weekend traveler and its small size eases maneuverability and makes the most of a small engine. Nissan March India launch in 2010

Nissan plans to launch their next generation small car model Nissan March in 2010, in India. The Nissan March would mark Nissan’s entry into the automatic passenger car market.

Shouhei Kimura, Nissan Motor India managing director said: “It will be launched in the ‘A´ segment category in India and will have 80% of localization.”

At this point, there is no information on the number of cars to be produced for India, or on the price of the Nissan March when it is launched here. As an A-segment car, the March would be competing against the Hyundai Santo, Chevrolet Spark, the Hyundai i10 etc in India.

This might be a good car alright in the A-segment – but somehow those faux-Beetle looks are not very convincing. The front treatment is European – shoddy European, in my opinion. The rest is tolerable. But like Renault did with the Logan, changing the front grill design of the Nissan March to suit Indian tastes would not be too difficult.

The Nissan March will be manufactured at Nissan’s plant in Oragadam. The Nissan March is one of the nine cars that Nissan plans to launch in the Indian market – the company already sells the Nissan X-Trail SUV  in India. Renault Nissan will invest Rs.40 billion ($833 million) in the plant, that would have a capacity to manufacture 4,00,000 cars every year for local and overseas markets.

Kimura also said that the Nissan March would be included in the 110,000 units that would be exported by the second half of 2010, following the signing of an MOU with Ennore Port Ltd.

Nissan plans to scale up the number of units for export to 1,80,000, over the next few years.

Most of the exports of the passenger vehicles and LVCs would be aimed at the European markets.

Kimura was quoted as saying, that since Ennore Port Ltd sanctioned 1,40,000 sq.m of land for exports, the Nissan March would be exported from the Oragadam plant.

The development of a ‘A’ platform is part of intiatives taken for Nissan GT 2012, Nissan’s new five year business plan.

The Nissan March would be launched from Nissan’s Thailand plant first, and then from India. Nissan has said that in its global manufacturing network, India is one of the five leading competitive countries to produce and export the Nissan March.

Nissan has not revealed how many units of Nissan March would be manufactured in India.

Ennore Port will invest Rs 110 crore to create a multi-cargo berth facility for Nissan. Ennore Port and Chennai Port Trust will together handle around 5,00,000 cars by 2011.

The Chennai Port Trust and Ennore Port are working to build infrastructure to match expansion plans of car manufacturers.

The 2010 Nissan March, that is in the design stage, is expected to have a more aggressive or sporty feel to attract male buyers.
