The Latest Evolution of An Iconic Sports Car

2010 Porsche 911 GT3. Porsche has revealed the updated and slightly more powerful 2010 911 GT3 ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The new model gets a lot of external subtle changes like the rest of the family 911, but adds a touch of racing to the mix. There is a new front bumper with a lower spoiler, larger air intakes with mesh inserts and modified bi-xenon headlamps. Other changes in the new GT3 include a redesigned rear spoiler, LED taillights and a new rear bumper.

In the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 provides a higher level above all: 1. performance and 2. driving dynamics. For the performance, power comes from an extended version of the Porsche’s naturally aspirated flat-six engine, which now reaches 3.8 liters and has 435 horsepower and 317 lbs.-ft of torque. This allows the GT3 to sprint 0-62 mph (100 kph) in 4.1 seconds and reaches 99 mph (160 kph) in 8.2 seconds. Top speed is 194 mph. Compared to the current GT3, the new model has a 200cc extra displacement helps to create the extra 20 hp.

Helping to keep all that power on the road are updated stability and traction control   systems that are designed to maintain the legacy of Porsche offers excellent driving dynamics while a greater measure of security. For the first time the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 comes with a particular variant of sports Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which offers the facility to deactivate both Stability Control (SC) and Traction Control (TC) in separate steps. And give the driver unrestricted control over the driving dynamics of your car, these functions are not automatically reactivated, even in the most extreme driving conditions, but only with the simple push of a button.

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 offers more grip and stability at high speeds, thanks to specific modifications to the aerodynamics of the car have increased front-loading and subsequent to the point where the air pressure down in the car is more than twice as great as in the old model. With the driving dynamics and performance increased to an even higher level, following the tradition of the Porsche brake system has also increased accordingly in the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3. The brakes now feature larger friction discs and a cover of aluminum to reduce un-sprung weight without further emerged. Brake ventilation has been improved, which guarantees a higher level of consistent stopping power over long periods. As an option, Porsche 911 GT3 comes as before with an exclusive version of the Porsche ceramic composite brakes (PCBs) made specifically for this model.

Make the car more suitable for the race track, the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 will be available with the option of new and highly innovative Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount (PADM) engine mountings. These special engine mounts recognise a particularly sporting, race-like driving style, making the normally “elastic” engine mounts harder and particularly resistant. This retains all the motoring comfort of the GT3 in everyday traffic, while on the race track the effect of the mass forces coming from the engine is much reduced, particularly in fast bends and on winding tracks. Yet a further advantage is improved traction when accelerating from a standstill.

Another new feature is the option of lifting the front axle which is capable of increasing the ground clearance of the car, for driving on bumpy surfaces or steep gradients – for example in an underground garage – 30 mm (approx. 1.2 inches).

The Euro price for the new GT3 is € 98,100 in Germany, the sale price including value added tax and national peculiarities is € 116,947. In the U.S. The GT3 will be in dealerships in October at a price of $ 112,200 (MSRP excluding tax). Porsche in the UK, fans can expect the new model at dealers this fall with a price of £ 81,914.

Though we rarely meet a Porsche we don't like, the 911 GT3 - a hardcore, track-tuned version of the legendary sports car - has always occupied a soft spot in our hearts. That likely won't change, as the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 has grown in all the right places.

That isn't immediately apparent, though a few visual cues do set the new GT3 apart from its predecessor. A new aerodynamics package adds a redesigned rear wing, along with new front and rear bumper fascias. The front grille is now body color, while the GT3 also sports revised turn signals and taillights - a hallmark of the revised 911 range.

The biggest growth, however, lies underneath the hood. The previous car's 3.6-liter flat-six engine is eschewed in favor of a new 3.8-liter unit. It's good for 435 hp, a 20-hp increase that Porsche attributes to both the extra displacement and the addition of variable cam timing. Notably absent, however, are direct fuel injection, a technology increasingly seen on Porsche's latest models . Also missing is the new PDK dual-clutch transmission - the new GT3 comes only with a six-speed manual, and Porsche won't confirm or deny rumors of eventually offering the PDK gearbox in the car.

No worries - even without the fancy transaxle and fuel delivery system, the new GT3's still a verifiable rocket. Porsche says the new car will move from 0-62 mph in a brief 4.1 seconds, and will ultimately hit a top speed of 194 mph. Perhaps it's a good thing the GT3 continues to offer Porsche's active suspension system (PASM), allowing the driver to select between a softer mode for casual driving and a stiffer setting for track days.

Such adaptivity is also found in a clever new option, the Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount. As its name suggests, the PADM system essentially acts as an active suspension for the engine itself, stiffening the engine mounts in hard driving to improve weight transfer. One new addition: stability control, though Porsche's added a neat trick to keep enthusiasts and racers alike happy. The system can be deactivated in two parts - one killing the stability control, the other disabling traction control - and unlike similar systems in lesser 911 models, neither is reactivated upon applying the brakes.

Though the 911 GT3 launches at the 2009 Geneva motor show in March, it won't arrive stateside until October. Porsche says pricing should begin at $112,000, excluding taxes and destination charges.

Porsche Officially Introduces The 911 GT3 R

Porsche has just announced its latest 911-based race car. The German supercar builder announced at the Autosport International show that it’s latest race car – called the 911 GT3 R – replaces the GT3 Cup S that we have seen at many race events worldwide. And to help it cater to a larger audience and post faster lap times, the GT3 R includes such equipment as ABS, traction control and an electronic throttle with a “auto blip” function gear down changes.

“Since we announced our intention to launch the 911 GT3 R, demand has been huge,” said Uwe Brettel, Head of Motorsport Sales. “The number of GT3 R vehicles we had planned for 2010 is almost sold out.”

Power is derived from a modified boxer engine that’s based on the 3.8-liter model. But to attain more power, cubic capacity has been increased to 4.0-liter and maximum power now stands at 480hp (358kW). All that power moves a car that weighs in at just 1,200kg (2,646 lbs).

Some body features include LED rear lights, additional wheel arches at the front and rear, a completely covered underbody, a rear diffuser and a more adjustable rear wing.

The suspension system consists of height-adjustable MacPherson struts up front, two-way shock absorbers and double coil springs. At the rear a rigidly mounted sub-frame with a height-adjustable multi-arm axle and more two-way shock absorbers and double coil springs do the job.
