If you bought gold intending to be safe in a crisis, and took possession of it, you will, in that crisis, find it impossible to spend your gold as if it were money. Take a gold coin out of your pocket today, and try and pay somebody with it, and you will be met with a blank stare. Gold is not currency. You cannot easily use it now to pay for anything. Of course there is a belief that it would operate as currency in hard times, and it remains just about possible. But the empirical evidence is not good. In places in our own times where a currency has broken down - places like Russia, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Iraq, Zimbabwe - gold did not emerge as a circulating currency and there was no prospect whatsoever of quitting those countries carrying gold. In these circumstances privately possessed gold was at best useless. At worst it can be extremely dangerous.

The truth about gold being used as money is this:- it is occasionally adopted in immensely rich societies (e.g. USA to the 1930s, industrialized Europe to 1914, Spain after discovering America, Imperial Rome, Ancient Athens). But if you try to use it in a crisis-torn country during a financial meltdown stick to small quantities - because you will probably be selling it as contraband, and at a huge discount to its international market price.

For larger (investment) quantities there is an effective alternative. Far better than gold in your possession is gold which is fully delivered, and is your property, but which is held in a country enjoying political stability, high local living standards, sound finances, the rule of law, and no tense international relations. On all of these criteria Switzerland (our most popular vault) scores very well.

So you are probably better advised to postpone taking possession until an emergency makes it absolutely necessary. In the meantime take delivery, but into a professional offshore vault, rather than into your personal possession. Your gold will be much safer than in domestic or safe-deposit box storage, it will be far cheaper to insure, and it will retain its full resale value. What's more you'll be able to bring your money back home later. Exchange controls usually stop capital flight, but rarely inward investment.

To avoid losing your money in that sharing out process you must avoid being a balance sheet creditor. This means that what you buy must be delivered to you (i.e. settled). Then it is removed from the supplier's balance sheet and becomes something you own. It's the law that a custodian's liquidator must deliver all property held in custody to its rightful owners - in full - before that sharing out of balance sheet assets to creditors can begin.

This means you are 100% protected from the insolvency of your custodian by the physical gold which is stored as your property.

Gold Coins

Buy gold coins or small gold bars and you can hold them in your hand, or possibly in a safe deposit box. Your gold is delivered (good), and in your possession (bad in large quantities).

You should try to get insurance cover if you buy a significant quantity, but this is not always easy, and of course you have to declare that you own gold in order to insure it, which you might not wish to do.

You will certainly find there is a significant premium on purchase price and a significant discount at sale, and this will dent your profits if you are buying for investment. Expect to lose about 8% this way, perhaps a little more in single coins and smaller denominations, or a little less in bulk.

You could find that you become a trapped owner should a financial meltdown occur. You may also discover your gold is not easily liquidated if - for example - exchange controls are implemented in the country where you live.

In spite of the drawbacks many people who buy a significant quantity of gold for investment offshore do keep a much smaller reserve in coins. This 2006 USA Liberty 'Buffalo', which is 1 oz and 99.99% pure gold, is owned by BullionVault's director, who thinks that while it may lack the investment efficiency of offshore good delivery bars, it is nevertheless very pretty. He paid a premium of 7% over spot and like most people who own coins has never yet tried to sell it.

It is relatively straightforward to buy gold coins. A search of Google for "gold coin dealers" will quickly produce some suppliers. Watch out for the big difference between numismatic coins and bullion coins. Bullion coins like the one pictured have no value as a collectible, and their worth is based only on their gold content.

Numismatic coins are for collectors. Their values vary according to any number of variables not related to bullion gold values.

Gold certificates and unallocated gold

Gold certificates are usually unallocated gold with an option to convert into allocated at the investor's option and cost.

Because it is undelivered, and remains indefinitely as a balance sheet liability of the provider, we cannot recommend unallocated gold to any retail customer. The insolvency of the provider risks total loss to the investor.

Most gold certificates are nevertheless unallocated. They confer a right to allocate, but allocation and the resulting storage charges may be so expensive that the only time the right is likely to be used is when the supplier is in financial trouble, and then it could be too late.

Why do suppliers offer unallocated gold? It's because it is very profitable. They have the use of your unallocated gold so they can lend it for revenue, or otherwise put it to their use. In very few cases is that the intention of the private bullion buyer.

Before you choose a certificate program make sure you know if the gold is unallocated - it usually is - and make a conscious decision to accept the considerable long term risks.

Depending on the level of confidence which government backing of gold investments inspires in you there may be an exception to the wider pool of unallocated certificated gold schemes. Certainly the most well-known and most respected of the certificate providers is the Perth Mint Certificate Program.

Gold Futures

Trading gold futures means you can buy gold on credit, gearing up your gold investment. But if you buy gold this way, sharp volatility will put you at risk of large losses arising from the leverage.

A case study – the story of Mike and Liz
The story of Mike and Liz illustrates the power of an investment loan strategy. Liz and Mike both want to invest to save for a dream vacation in 10 years. Liz diligently makes a lump sum deposit at the end of each year. Mike borrows $30,000 from Manulife Bank to invest immediately.

Comfort Light, that’s what CL comes from. Well, actually it’s Comfort Leicht, German for the same thing (would you figure that..). And people will surely expect just that from the car. However, light is not ad adjective for power. This new car, based on the third-generation W216 model, is said to have 604-horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V12.

According to the British press, the 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe will be launched next year to enter the competition with the Audi RS5 and the next generation M3 Coupe. The UK source believes the 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe will continue to use the performance company's previous 6.2-liter V8 engine coupled with a 7-speed MCT (multi-clutch transmission). The 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe will use the same powertrain as the C63 Sedan facelift which will also come next year.

However, in our opinion, if the 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe will become a reality, it will probably have the new 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine which will send to the car's rear wheels a lot more than 500 hp.

According to a source inside the company, the 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe will be the most powerful of the three competing models (including the RS5 and the next M3 coupe).

The 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe is also expected to offer the option of a Performance package which will boost both is power and performance figures. The 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Performance package will also offer aerodynamics parts and interior upgrades.

There are also rumors of a Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series which will be a hardcore version of the German performance model. The Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series is expected to hit us with a sledge hammer sometime in 2012.

It's been nearly four years since the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class underwent a major overhaul, so M-B is planning a few subtle improvements to the third-generation W216 model before an all-new S-Class coupe arrives on the scene in late 2014.

The new coupe will continue to be available in a variety of variants, but our spy shooters weathering the wintery climes have caught what they believe to be the 604-horsepower twin-turbocharged V12 version wearing a slightly modified fascia adorned with a single chrome slat, enlarged logo, LED daytime driving lamps and a new front bumper and splitter mildly reminiscent of the SLS AMG.

When the refreshed model debuts either next month at the Geneva Motor Show or later this year in Paris don't expect any seriously substantive tweaks to be made to the power train. That'll likely come in the next few years when Mercedes begins downsizing and turbo charging, and we expect the S-Class coupe to be one of the first models to benefit from the new mill.

Mazda: What's coming in 2010 - - and beyond

CONFIRMED FOR 2010:

CX-7: (photo) The CX-7 gets a new base engine: A 161 horsepower version of the 2.5 liter four-cylinder found in the2009 Mazda6 and 2010 Mazda3. The 244 horsepower 2.3 liter turbo engine will continue as an option. Other changes include tweaked styling, a stiffer body structure, and improvements in NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), with a particular emphasis on reducing wind noise.

CX-9: (photo) Mazda's big crossover gets its three-year facelift in the form of a bigger, happier grille, larger side mirrors, and other detail changes. The interior sees similar tweaks intended to give the CX-9 a more upscale look.

MAZDA3: (photos: sedan, hatchback) The Mazda3 is all new for 2010. Outside, the '10-3 gets Mazda's new corporate smiley-face grille; inside it gets a long list of standard and optional equipment of the sort traditionally found on larger cars -- dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and push-button ignition. The 3 once again offers two engines; the 3i gets a 148 hp two-liter, while the 3s gets the 167 hp 2.5 from the mid-size Mazda6. Unchanged: The Mazda3's fun-to-drive demeanor.

MAZDA5: Electronic stability control is now standard.

MAZDA6: A new Touring Plus trim level, available on both 4-cylinder ("i") and six-cylinder ("s") versions, fits in between the Touring and the Grand Touring; it includes a moonroof, Bluetooth phone connectivity, electroluminescent gauges, a blind spot warning system, and an alarm. The Grand Touring model gets a new Technology Package which bundles Bluetooth and a color multi-information display.

MAZDASPEED3: (photo) The new version of the Mazdaspeed3 will once again share its 5-door body with the Mazda3 hatchback, with a big hood scoop to differentiate it from the regular 3 (and perhaps to make it look a bit more like the Subaru WRX). The 263 horsepower 2.3 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is unchanged from the previous Mazdaspeed3, but the manual transmission's gear ratios have been revised. Mazda promises improvements to suspension, steering and braking which should make the new car's handling superior to the outgoing 'Speed3.

MX-5 MIATA: The entry-level SV model has been dropped, leaving the Sport as the least-expensive Miata. And speaking of the Sport, it's no longer available with the optional folding hard-top. The Grand Touring Premium Package now includes Bluetooth phone connectivity and SIRIUS satellite radio.

RX-8: The rotary-engine sports car gets new 10-spoke wheels with a rotary motif, and Grand Touring models now come with a moonroof and Sirius satellite radio as standard.

TRIBUTE: Mazda's version of the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner gets some new standard equipment: An outside temperature gauge for all models, garage-door opener and auto-dimming rear view mirror on Grand Touring and HEV (hybrid) models, and a one-touch open/close moonroof for the HEV. Steel Blue and Ingot Silver join the paint palette.

BEYOND 2010:

MAZDA2: (photo) Mazda plans to enter the subcompact market by bringing the Mazda2 hatchback -- already sold in other markets, including Europe and Japan -- to the United States and Canada. Mazda will show the North American-bound version of the Mazda2 at the Los Angeles Auto Show; it is scheduled to go on sale in late 2010 as a 2011 model.

CONFIRMED FOR 2010

C CLASS: The C gets smaller side view mirrors and a nicer leather-wrapped steering wheel. New options include a rear-view camera, USB audio adapter, power lumbar adjustment, and mirrors that tilt down for parking. Rear-wheel-drive C300 and C350 Sport models get an optional Dynamic Handling Package that includes active damping suspension, speed-sensitive steering, 18" twin-spoke wheels and steering wheel shift paddles for automatic models.

CL CLASS: The big coupe gets bigger side mirrors, variable-ratio Direct Steer system, a night vision camera, lane-departure prevention system, automatic high beam control, and a driver drowsiness detector; CLs with the Active Body Control system also get a crosswind stabilization system. Inside, the CL gets improved switchgear, a new stereo/navigation head unit, multicolor ambient lighting, a nicer leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an optional rear seat entertainment system. Mercedes will offer a limited-run "100th Anniversary of Mercedes-Benz Edition" based on the CL550 4MATIC.

CLS CLASS: A new premium leather steering wheel is standard.

E CLASS: An all-new E-Class debuts for 2010 -- not only as a sedan (photo) but in coupe form (photo) as well, the latter featuring a standard panoramic glass roof. The E will be available in six-cylinder (E350) and eight-cylinder (E550) form, with the diesel-powered E350 BlueTEC following the gas-powered versions by a few months. New features include night vision, high beams that automatically adjust to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, and Attention Assist, which senses if the driver is getting drowsy. The hot-rod E63 AMG (photo) gets the powertrain from the 2009 SL63 AMG: The 518 horsepower version of AMG's 6.2 liter V8 and a 7-speed automatic transmission with an electronically-controlled mechanical clutch in place of the torque converter. A diesel version, the E350 BLUETEC, joins the lineup during calendar year 2010.

G CLASS: The box-on-wheels gets a round of minor improvements: Body-colored door handles, more chrome, a sport-tuned exhaust system, leather dashboard, heated wood-and-leather steering wheel, 115 volt power outlet, and a spare tire cover.

GL CLASS: (photo) M-B's largest SUV gets updated styling (new headlights, taillights and bumpers), new wheels, and an updated interior with a revised instrument cluster, seats, ambient lighting, and standard burl walnut trim. GL550 models get heated and ventilated seats and LED daytime running lights as standard. The diesel-powered GL320 BLUETEC is now called the GL350 BlueTEC, although the powertrain is unchanged. The new POST SAFE system unlocks the doors and shuts off the engine after a crash.

GLK CLASS: Mercedes' new entry-level SUV, the GLK350 (photo), is their answer to theAudi Q5, BMW X3, and Acura RDX. Based on the C350 sedan, the GLK boasts unique styling and a very attractive starting price -- under $35,000.

ML CLASS: All MLs get burl walnut trim, a leather steering wheel, and the POST SAFE system (see GL Class). Mercedes' first use of the Two-Mode hybrid system they developed in partnership with GM, Chrysler and BMW will come in the form of the ML450 hybrid (photo). The all-wheel-drive ML450 gets an Atikonson-cycle 3.5 liter V6 and two electric motors, for a combined output of 335 hp and 381 lb-ft of torque. EPA fuel economy figures (21 MPG city/24 highway) are significantly better than the ML350 (15/20), well behind the 2010 Lexus RX400h (28/26), and similar to the diesel-powered ML320 BLUETEC (18/24). Speaking of the ML320 BLUETEC, it's now called the ML350 BlueTEC, although the engine remains unchanged.

R CLASS: The diesel-powered R320 BLUETEC has been named R350 BlueTEC, although the engine hasn't changed. All Rs gets tinted side glass (blue on the R350 BlueTEC - get it?), darkened tail lenses, a nicer leather-wrapped steering wheel, and POST-SAFE (see GL Class).

S CLASS: (photo) Mercedes' flagship sedan gets updated styling, interior improvements, and several new active safety features including automatic high-beams, a lane-departure warning system, driver drowsiness detection and an active body control system that can compensate for crosswinds. Also new: An updated stereo, variable ratio steering, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system. Even bigger news is the addition of the S400 hybrid (photo), which uses a 279 hp 3.5 liter V6 boosted by a 20 hp electric motor. The car will not be able to run on electric power alone, as is the case with the ML450, but Mercedes claims the S400 will achieve 29 MPG in the EPA highway cycle, compared to 22 MPG for the V8-powered S550. Meanwhile, the S63 and S65 AMG models get a new Torque Vectoring Brake system, a modification of the electronic stability control system that reduces understeer, and the Active Body Control system now provides crosswind stabilization.

SL CLASS: The big roadster gets a nicer leather-wrapped steering wheel, variable-ratio Direct Steer steering, HD radio and SIRIUS real-time traffic as standard.

SLK CLASS: The new SLK300 Diamond White Edition gets Diamond White metallic paint, unique interior trim, AMG-style wheels, and a sport-tuned suspension.

SPRINTER: Mercedes-Benz will take over marketing of the Sprinter van, which was formerly sold in the US as a Dodge. Sprinters will continue to be sold under the Freightliner badge as well.

BEYOND 2010:

E-CLASS: A wagon will join the sedan and coupe in mid-2010, badged as a 2011 model. The E wagon will be available in a single model, the E350 4MATIC, with a 3.5 liter V6 engine and all-wheel-drive.
